V.S.O.P. RECORDS is pleased to announce the release of V.S.O.P.#126 CD Omega OSL 5 THE LIGHTHOUSE ALL STARS Plus Ten: JAZZ ROLLS ROYCE. This 1957 recording was commissioned for the 1957 UCLA Homecoming Show and Bob Cooper was called upon to compose and arrange the music to fit this occasion. The writing called for not just the Lighthouse All Stars, but ten additional musicians in order to fill out the sextet into a regular big band, with a view of preserving the sound of the smaller group in a larger ensemble. We have chosen to release this material in tribute to Howard Rumsey, who is being honored this year by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute. This is a remastered version

about
COOP SALUES THE "CO-OP" -- A lighter type of arrangement with a familiar chord pattern, intended to promote free improvising for the soloists.
An introduction by the rhythm section during which the tuba and bass trombone enter, establishing a low E flat pedal tone on the dominant.
The small group establishes the theme at first; after eight measures the bass joins in with the trombones and trumpets in two-part counterpoint with slight variations taking place in the tuba pedal. At the end of the theme the parts come together in harmony.
Then the solos: tenor, trombone, trumpet and piano with alternating background choruses. The band returns to the opening theme, continuing to the coda.
