“For B and D” (Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington) is a swinger that lets the band romp over the chord changes of “Take The ‘A’ Train.” After a quiet beginning and a bit of Monty Budwig’s bass, the great Bob Cooper and his fellow tenor Jackie Kelso get to stretch out. Even with the familiar chord changes, the writing is very original both behind the soloists and as the ensembles build the piece to its climax.
