V.S.O.P. RECORDS is pleased to announce the release of V.S.O.P.#126 CD Omega OSL 5 THE LIGHTHOUSE ALL STARS Plus Ten: JAZZ ROLLS ROYCE. This 1957 recording was commissioned for the 1957 UCLA Homecoming Show and Bob Cooper was called upon to compose and arrange the music to fit this occasion. The writing called for not just the Lighthouse All Stars, but ten additional musicians in order to fill out the sextet into a regular big band, with a view of preserving the sound of the smaller group in a larger ensemble. We have chosen to release this material in tribute to Howard Rumsey, who is being honored this year by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute. This is a remastered version

about

MAMBO DEL QUADO -- This jazz composition with a Latin influence interspersed among jazz color and phrases. Starting with a vamp from the drums, vibes, bass and piano. The small band again stating the theme first and the brass background entering on the bridge, where the rhythm goes into a jazz style (instead of Latin). The last eight bars of the first chorus is with the brass section answering in the imitative style of the theme. A long progressively building interlude precedes each soloist.
After the piano solo, an improvised montuno takes place with on the rhythm instruments. The beginning theme is repeated and a coda with short chords leading a pattern from the tympani to the finish.
