“Perk’s Tune” from the 1975 session is a showcase for Bill Perkins on alto. Perk is best-known for his tenor and baritone playing so this performance and his work with David’s big band cast some new light on his artistry. “This is the piece de resistance of the whole recording. I knew that if I wrote a piece for Perk, he would play something special. Other than a few short sections that were written out, he played freely over an elaborate background. His character, personality and individuality came out on this piece. Nobody else sounded like him. Perk even practiced the trumpet so he could build up the muscles around his embouchure and play the sound that he was looking for.” David’s writing for the ensembles on “Perk’s Tune,” particularly for the reed section, is exquisite.
