V.S.O.P. RECORDS is pleased to announce the release of V.S.O.P.#126 CD Omega OSL 5 THE LIGHTHOUSE ALL STARS Plus Ten: JAZZ ROLLS ROYCE. This 1957 recording was commissioned for the 1957 UCLA Homecoming Show and Bob Cooper was called upon to compose and arrange the music to fit this occasion. The writing called for not just the Lighthouse All Stars, but ten additional musicians in order to fill out the sextet into a regular big band, with a view of preserving the sound of the smaller group in a larger ensemble. We have chosen to release this material in tribute to Howard Rumsey, who is being honored this year by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute. This is a remastered version

about
PRELUDE TO THE QUEEN -- The bass and tom toms open with a slow syncopated rhythm. After two measures the vibes and piano enter, establishing an underlying pattern for enhancing the melodies. The oboe begins the main theme with the trombone in a straight mute playing a counterline. The trumpet enters three measures later with its own improvisation. The whole basis for the composition has now been stated.
After the oboe solo, the three solo instruments trade melodies and the trombone solos, then the trumpet solos in the same fashion, with the background always building. At the completion of the trumpet solo, the climax has arrived, then a recapitulation and ending with the full power of the orchestra.
