V.S.O.P. RECORDS is pleased to announce the release of V.S.O.P.#126 CD Omega OSL 5 THE LIGHTHOUSE ALL STARS Plus Ten: JAZZ ROLLS ROYCE. This 1957 recording was commissioned for the 1957 UCLA Homecoming Show and Bob Cooper was called upon to compose and arrange the music to fit this occasion. The writing called for not just the Lighthouse All Stars, but ten additional musicians in order to fill out the sextet into a regular big band, with a view of preserving the sound of the smaller group in a larger ensemble. We have chosen to release this material in tribute to Howard Rumsey, who is being honored this year by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute. This is a remastered version

about

STRIKE UP THE BAND-- Because this is familiar to the UCLA students as a fight song and to the musicians as a jazz classic it was a natural for the opening of the concert. He started in a marching style for a few measures, then into a long jazz version with the small group and large brass section playing separately and together. After the trumpet solo and interlude takes place leading into a new show theme based upon the same chord progression. In this section Victor is featured with a vibraphone solo which progresses into a very fast tempo with interruptions from the bass section. Then the tenor solo and a few choruses of alternating 4-bar phrases with the drums and soloists. Then the "out" chorus with the full ensemble finishing with 4-bar breaks by the soloists until the final chorus.
