V.S.O.P. RECORDS is pleased to announce the release of V.S.O.P.#126 CD Omega OSL 5 THE LIGHTHOUSE ALL STARS Plus Ten: JAZZ ROLLS ROYCE. This 1957 recording was commissioned for the 1957 UCLA Homecoming Show and Bob Cooper was called upon to compose and arrange the music to fit this occasion. The writing called for not just the Lighthouse All Stars, but ten additional musicians in order to fill out the sextet into a regular big band, with a view of preserving the sound of the smaller group in a larger ensemble. We have chosen to release this material in tribute to Howard Rumsey, who is being honored this year by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute. This is a remastered version

about

THE CLOWN'S DANCE (in G Minor) -- Introduction opens with a two-bar phrase by the tuba and the bass trombone, sequenced in entrances by the trombone and trumpets. This section is also used later as an interlude and modulation into the trombone solo. The theme is stated in unison with the small group until the bridge where the bass section enters in chordal fashion. Upon completion of the theme, the improvisation begins. First trumpet, then vibes, then tenor. The interlude now takes place building to the trombone solo. After Frank has finished his trombone solo, Victor plays a piano chorus to set the mood for the recapitulation. The bass solos on the bridge this time and the band goes into the final statement with an extension, using fragments of the introduction as an ending.
